A Whale of Food

Congratulations to CALGARY!! Each year Jon and I participated, through our church, in this event by dropping off bags to every door in our neighbourhood and sometimes others. Three days later we would collect the food put in these bags and left on neighbours porches. Rain or shine we were out there collecting food and delivering it to the LDS Church building. We had a great time and each year we got closer to the record. There are a lot of charitable people in Calgary, and it makes me proud to have once lived in that City.

Taken from Thunder bay Newspaper September 21 2008 ---"The Calgary Food Bank collected a whale of an amount of food in one day.

The food drive yesterday took in more than 200 tonnes of food, or the weight of a blue whale, the heaviest animal on Earth.Food bank spokesman April Cruz said that amount of chow set a new record for the most amount of food collected in a single day.

More than 7,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent the week distributing bags to nearly 360,000 homes and businesses in Calgary and then returning to pick them up.

The results will be sent to Guinness World Records' head office in London. The old record of 90 tonnes was held by Regina. Last year, the food bank serviced 87,202 people and Cruz said that number has gone up slightly this year.
